I’d spent my best diet ammo, my strongest clean eating facts and wittiest caveman comebacks. Still, pizza was winning.
“I don’t know what else to tell you,” I said, “I hate feeling … loose.”
“Loose?,” he asked.
“Yeah, loose. To me, eating clean is more about not feeling loose and less about everything else.”
He finally got quiet. He wasn’t new to CrossFit, wasn’t new to clean eating either but he “loved ice cream more than abs.” And the whole thing started because I skipped the bread and waited for the steak at dinner.
“Why do you do it?,” he’d asked. “Vanity, performance, fear? What motivates you to begin, and stay, eating the way you do?”
I explained my Fran time and my max snatch. After I did I felt like a dead tree standing in the forest, taking up space accomplishing nothing. Yes, I want to improve those events, but I don’t walk though the grocery store thinking this squash will shave three seconds off my Fran, or this is magic bacon, it will totally get me an extra kilo tomorrow (ok, sometimes I do).
I told him about biomarkers, triglycerides and insulin, he believed me and said “your blood work actually makes you stay away from beer?”
“ … No, you’re right, it doesn’t.”
The best and most real reason I can give for staying paleo is how I feel when I’m not paleo: Loose.
I hate my schmedium shirt feeling like a women’s small (not that I’ve tried a women’s small). I hate actually feeling my love handles when I run. I hate skin still moving after I land while I’m jumping rope. I hate muscle-ups feeling like someone turned up the gravity. I hate avoiding the mirror because I know what I can look like. I hate feeling like I have to sleep off that last meal.
That’s why I leave the beer in the fridge and the bread on the table. It’s for all the other stuff too, but mostly because life’s hard enough as it is, I don’t need food fighting me too.
“It would have been a lot easier if you said that to begin with,” he said.
