The champ broke three Event records. A farm boy staged a comeback worthy of the podium. And a woman no one knew, captivated a crowd.
As unbelievable as it sounds, the real show at the Central East Regional wasn’t in the field, it was in the stands.
“Is that kid doing burpees?,” a member of my media team asked. At the time the 4000+ crowd was focused on the competition floor … except for one kid.
He was maybe 12-year-old, inspired by his surroundings, and training alone in the nosebleeds.
Until that I was almost feverish. I’d wanted every camera angle perfect. Every word I wrote beautiful. Every picture a masterpiece. When I saw that boy doing burpees, my shoulders relaxed a little. The squint from my brow softened and the corner of my mouth turned up. I looked back at the floor full of barbells muscles and sweat, and I thanked CrossFit again for teaching me a lesson:
It’s not about the athletes doing work on the Regional floor, it’s about the fans doing burpees in the stands.
