The nature of the beast
I’m not really sure why this is surprising, but in case you didn’t know, there are douche bags who CrossFit. And there’s a chance they’re beating you in the Open.
There is a special place in hell for cheaters and traitors. I think I’ve even dreamt of it before. Dante calls it Cocytus and it involves eating the heads of people while being frozen in a lake. But I’m not sure if CrossFitters who fudge numbers in the Open deserve to be neck deep with Judas. Maybe they’ll just do 12.1 for eternity.
The Open is pure CrossFit. It’s everyone getting together and playing. It’s community activity that truly is making people better. But, as with everything else, there are going to be some people who just don’t get the message. Those who take advantage of the system.
So, what are loyal CrossFit followers to do when our beloved Open is abused?
What we do best of course: Workout, get better.
It sucks when someone manipulate a system. But it doesn’t suck near as bad as letting that effect CrossFit for us. I’m not saying we have to be blind, I’m actually saying we need to be even more focused. Focused on ourselves and not them.
The Open and CrossFit in general is a pretty good idiot eradicator, but it’s not fool proof. You’ll never control those competing beside you or next door, or across the globe. You’ll start cutting on yourself during fits on insanity if you try. But the best part is, you can control your training and your reaction. You can become so good that no amount of douche-baggery will hold you back. That’s what world champion Rich Froning Jr., does. That’s what every other CrossFitter does who keeps right on having fun in the face of Open abusers.
The nature of the competitive beast is change. Nearly all of the time, we are enhanced by it no matter what level of fitness we are currently. But sometimes it makes people change into a bigger version of what they already are. Don’t be surprised when a douche gets douchier, just keep training and be thankful you’re staying out of burpee hell.
