Getting your parents to CrossFit
The Reebok CrossFit Games on ESPN reminds me of a blockbuster someone made from a dog-eared, best-selling novel called, “CrossFit.” We may love them both, but for two very different reasons. It’s those reasons that need to constantly come up in our Facebook feeds, and water cooler conversations.
He told me that he was bringing his mom in the day before it actually happened. “She’s 57, and nervous. She says she doesn’t wanna be on TV,” my friend said.
That’s a legitimate objection among many illegitimate excuses. If you saw the CrossFit blockbuster before you read the CrossFit book, you may have gotten the wrong impression too.
“Well, what did you say?,” I asked knowing the answer.
My friends list of why his mom should CrossFit sounded like a waiter explaining today’s specials; increased range of motion, improved cardiovascular fitness, stronger bone density…and on.
I’m a trainer, and even I stopped listening seven minutes before he started talking. In fact, I pretty much stopped caring about the technical crap a long time ago. Technical just isn’t very motivating.
“How often do you see your mom?,” I asked. “Not much.” “Well, I want my mom to CrossFit because of all the crap that’s in the Level One book also, but that’s not how I would explain CrossFit to her,” I said. “I would say, ‘I want to spend more time with you, and I think this would be fun, and I think you would like it.”‘
“I never thought of it that way,” he said a few long seconds later.
My friend’s mom smiled during the applause and high-fives after her first workout ended. It was like she finally read the book with the back-story, and the method, and the internal monologues. The reason for the movie in the first place. She finally understood the plot that her son had been trying to explain to her all along.
Maybe, if he had started by sharing the book with her, instead of selling it’s benefits to her, she wouldn’t have taken so long to like the movie. Or, maybe not.
