Why do you love CrossFit?

The enjoyment CrossFit returns is felt  in different ways by different people. The reason for your first workout is unique to you and you alone. Why we return everyday is a mystery to those outside, obvious to those inside.

We don’t check the blog at 7:02pm every night to see what the WOD is going to be all because we kinda like to work out. We don’t read the words written here because we are bored. We don’t post PRs on FaceBook and phone taken self-portraits because we are ashamed of your journey. We are here and we are on the WOD floor because we love CrossFit.

We look at the tomorrows WOD because all of us are a strange breed; we like to know what we will put our bodies and mind through. Would we not go to the gym if we don’t like what is programmed, some might but for us deep in love with CrossFit the word “Fran” wouldn’t even keep us away.

We read each night’s blog hoping that the words on the screen will help us with the next step in our journey. With each sentence we want guidance, we want reasons to still keep fighting our fight, and we want hope. In the blogs we find our life’s story, we see our family & friends, and finally we see a mirror.

Each night we browse through the FaceBook updates “liking” other posts about CrossFit from all over the world. We comment with congrats or words of support. We do this because no matter what we understand the glory, the triumph, and we all understand the pain.

Outsiders may call is brainwashed we just call it devotion.

I spent the weekend learning CrossFit. There were truly great athletes teaching us about the push press, deadlift, and all of the functional movements of CrossFit. And somewhere between air squats and push press, I fell in love all over again. My life is CrossFit. I read about it every day, I talk to athletes all the time and try to tell their love story for CrossFit, my whole family does CrossFit…I thought I could not love CrossFit anymore than I already do. But I was wrong.

I think of CrossFit as a part of my life, it is not just something I do at 6:30. It is truly like a marriage. Sometimes I get mad at it because I think it should be giving me more, even if at the time I am half assing things expecting everything in return. There are times I am so starry eyed with CrossFit that I have trouble seeing that other parts of my life need tending too.

By definition CrossFit is “constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement.” For me by definition CrossFit is “a stabilizer for my life.” When you try to obtain balance in your life but you have not placed the correct stabilizers within your life….balance will never be obtained. Faith, family, friends, writing, and CrossFit are my stabilizers in life and that is why I love CrossFit. Sometimes I need it to hold me up and sometimes I need it make me fall…

But no matter what I need from it…CrossFit is there.

If I need faith in myself, CrossFit brings it to me, if I need a fight, CrossFit brings it to me, and if I need hope, the CrossFit Community brings it to me. This is why I love CrossFit.

Why do you love CrossFit?

Skill:

Rope climb
*Learn the skill itself. Practice it for speed. Change techniques, or even dominant foot position. Upside down, and “L” positions, or starting from seated are all good options as is testing a legless version.

Box jump
*In-between the other skills listed, work up to a tall box jump. The skill is in fact extending the hip, and moving the feet quick enough.

L-sit
*If the “L” is not possible, any support variation is cool. Use rings or paralettes.

_______
*Fill in the blank with whatever you need to work on most.
**Rotate through all of the above within (30) minutes. If there is a specific skill that is not coming, this is the week to diagnose why, break it down, and add the auxiliary to make dreams reality.

Post something to comments.

As a teenager in high school, my guy friends and I had a joke, a saying that we passed around a lot and that was, “It builds character!”
If you didn’t play a sport, you were working on the farm, planting tobacco, stripping tobacco, picking and shucking corn, pick’n green beans and helping can or freeze them. Hard labor for my dad and granddad, but we all did it from my grandmother down to my baby sister. When you came in contact with someone that didn’t work like that, they’d ask why and we’d chuckle and say, “it builds character.” Real reason – we’d get our asses tanned by mom and dad if we didn’t.
Crossfit is the closest I get to that work ethic, that building of character! And that’s why I love it!
