How to stop biting your nails

Sep 26, 2012 10 Comments by

My hands bled because I washed them like a mental patient trying to make the demons go away. I would scrub skin away every time I shook a hand, went to the bathroom, did nothing, did something. One day I stopped, that night I started biting my nails.

Back then life felt like a play I was watching that was missing a main character, like I was holding something back. Sometimes I could medicate it way with activity or friends, but most of the time it just felt like the first breath after finishing Thanksgiving dinner-full.

That was nearly six years ago, and I have wrote nearly everyday since. When I started writing, I stopped biting.

The reason I hear my neighbors fighting all the time, the reason some people channel surf for hours, the reason you shop until your in debt, or eat every three seconds, the reason I washed and then chewed my hands to the bone has nothing to do with disorders, or will, or environment. I was just bored, stuck, and missing the point.

For a really long time I believed I was a big tough guy with unbelievable will power. That bad habits I shared with others were non-issues for me, after all, whenever I wanted to, I stopped. I learned that I’m not, and I couldn’t. I never overcame anything, I simply exchanged one addiction for another, I found something new to chew on. But this time, it’s one that makes me feel accomplished, one that makes me cry and smile, one that I choose to do.

The secret that makes you stop biting your nails or washing your hands or tapping you pen or drinking seventeen beers is writing. It’s mountain climbing. It’s painting, sailing, teaching. You will stop biting your nails when you find something much better to chew on, something you were born to do, not something you do  just to pass the time.
