The things you can learn while watching a great speaker can be instrumental if and when you decide to apply them. The things you learn from watching the crowd during a great speech is something much more special, somehow, more real.
Recently, I watched as a younger speaker addressed his an audience already in relative agreement with what he had to say. He didn’t really need to sell anyone, he just needed to be himself, and convey his message. His audience contained the young, the old, the rich and the poor. His audience contained his mentor.
I know this because I know the young man speaking. I also know the much older man in the front row listening intently to his pupil on stage. I listened to the words spoken to the crowd. The audience sucked it all in, every pretty consonant, every meaningful vowel, as if every word was a morsel of food removing them from starvation. Then, I watched his mentor, a much older more educated predecessor, do something I thought to be more defining and telling than any glorious sentence to have left the speakers mouth. I watched the mentor take notes from his own student.
It has been said that life while taking notes is not really living. I get that. But that phrase only rings true if note taking is all you do. A life full of dog eared journals and endless footprints within books is worthless if it isn’t coupled with action.
Action, in it’s purest sense can never be wrong, or suspect. Action is always better than nothing. With action we are alive and valuable. Action is endless, unapologetic and progressive. True action is preceded by learning and taking notes, failing, then coming back stronger to succeed again and again.
The speaker was great. I toke notes, I have since I acted. The mentor, however, was something different. He taught his best lesson front the front row and he never said a word. Never stop being the student, even if everyone thinks your the mentor. Never stop taking notes no matter who may be talking. Most importantly, all of your notes and epiphanies are worthless, if you don’t do something-anything.
