Burn it down to make it grow

Jul 05, 2012 16 Comments by

A few months ago some good friends of mine that own a local McDonald’s decided to remodel. In less than a day, they tore down the entire restaurant that had stood for decades. Today, three months later, it stands open for business. Almost exactly the same as it was before demolition, except for one big difference. It’s more successful.

Every time I would drive past in those per-demolition days, the single lane drive-through would have a few cars present, maybe a line forming. But today, every time I pass the double drive-through, it’s bursting at the seems. It’s the same food and the same location with a few updates and tweaks nothing more. So why is it so much more successful today when in truth nothing has changed?

I couldn’t shake this question until I remember the key component to success in anything and everything we do. All success starts with the a willingness to burn it all down to the shards. To make the familiar, unrecognizable. Not to just get everything out on the table in hopes of dealing with things one by one, but by burning the table down with everything on it.

This is exactly how we enter CrossFit, and exactly why others won’t, they are not yet ready for the heat. To enter CrossFit most of us had to burn the misconceptions of fitness we let propagate our minds for years and years. To enter CrossFit most of us had to go against everything we are told of comfort, and health. CrossFit success, like all success, comes first with what you are willing to set on fire.

Blessing comes when we fight instinct not when we follow a religion of people, or when we are led by the mentality of the herd or seduced by he who owns the loudest voice. When we demolish, not fix, the addicted version of us, the cheater, the liar, the fraud-we rise as a phoenix from the ashes of who we were. Location doesn’t matter, appearances are deceiving, and you just can’t fix some things. Some things take complete and utter destruction before they will ever be what they were meant to be. And you can’t argue results.

You want better, thinner, healthier, stronger, cuter, sexier, smarter? Good for you and welcome to the club. My friends above were willing to take a risk with something that already looked pretty good from the outside. They were willing to accept the taunts, failures, and accusations of the naysayers and for that willingness to start a fire, they were rewarded. That’s how it always begins though isn’t it?

We all get that feeling that says, “I am better than this”. The successful say, “$%^% it, lets burn the whole place down, and see what new and exciting grows from the soot”. Everyone else is too just scared of the heat.

Ash~ sit on tires with feet inside & reach back to the ground & up. Not so easy for people with back issues.
