Blinded by the lights
Humankind’s ability to create havoc is understated more and more everyday. CrossFitters, while especially different from the majority even to the point of a different species classification, are no exception to this rule even though we would like to be. Without sounding foolishly simple, maybe all it will take to cure unnecessary chaos is a vision.
There are those who see clearly, yet have no perception. There are those that are blind yet retain vision. A vision not perfect, but ideal all the same.
Visions are not goals to be jotted on paper this New Years. They are but ideals burnt into your heart you can not live without. They are born a moment in time that we remember for ever. A so called, “vision moment”. A defining point where we realized that we had seen all along, but that we had failed to observe. A time in life where we came to terms with our very real self-deception and we hate it enough to change. That point where our vision means more than our sight ever could.
I don’t believe vision moments are few and far between. I do believe we fail to observe them around us everyday. It’s quite possible the reason we do this is; “sleep is easier than standing and true observation takes selflessness”, or maybe we took our eyes off the target thereby forgetting our one true aim, our life’s purpose. Of which there are many.
Santayana said, “A fanatic is a man who re-doubles his efforts while losing sight of his aim. Goals are not aims. Goals are trivialized today. Goals are post-its on a white board that may never become reality because they may not fit within in our “aim”, within our “purpose”. More correctly stated, goals loosely defined are but distractions leading us astray from the compelling vision we know we are too follow.
Soon enough we will look back on the year and make preparations for the upcoming season. Soon enough. Until then remember your vision, align your aim based on your life’s target and goals will sort of just fit into the tapestry of life. If we separate the goal from the purpose it becomes meaningless, and we simply will live life with the ability to see, void the talent of vision.
Personally, I chose to be fanatical with an aim. A zealot with purpose. Not a man who can see that is void of vision, but a human who remembers life has a purpose and it is not a checklist of things to complete. Life is an allotment of experiences we just can’t live well without, nor can we help others to do the same.
