Breakfast: Why You Should Never Eat It….
Fate leads those who follow, and drags those who resist.
I have hesitated atop a throne of diet jargon for some time before I drew the short straw that lead me to this post. This post makes past versions of me very wrong. This I love. Wrong is the new drug. Being wrong, and admitting to how wrong we are is a sign of how right we can be. Being right…or at least more correct should help more people, which is the entire goal of me writing this shit everyday. So here’s the right info, of which I have gleamed through trial, tribulation, and experiment.
Break The Fast:
The diet dogma we are all taught to believe; Eat a huge breakfast, its the most important meal of the day. It gets the metabolism revved up, so you can burn fat. It provides energy. These are all statements we have heard and worshipped. And they are all very wrong. And they are all created by Jimmy Dean, Bob Evans, Met-RX, and anyone else who can profit from you eating more food, more often.
Currently there is enough food processed everyday in America for us all to consume 4000/cal daily. Coincidentally there is 12+ billion dollars in advertising spent per year to make you buy your 4000/cal. Thus-ly…breakfast must be ingested…right?
If i skip Breakfast, won’t I get Fat?
Years ago I would have said yes. Back then, even though I knew better, like many of us, I would blindly follow supplement companies, and commercials, and cute little magazines all preaching the same thing. Eat early, eat often, stoke the fire.
I would simply avoid a most basic law of thermodynamics applied to the human body. Calories in vs Calories out. Your body could give a shit weather you call it breakfast, dinner, snack, or desert. Or when you eat it. You will get fat if you eat too many calories. You will lost weight if you burn more than you take in, and eating upon awaking doesn’t make you burn fat faster….it actually does the opposite.
Remember that old friend Insulin. Our little friend the storage hormone that ensures we keep fat on us for times of famine. Well clearly with 4000 calories a day available to us, we will not starve anytime soon. So that biologically beautiful hormone, turns to a deranged asshole because we rape it into becoming a “glucose mop”. And it’s not very efficient at cleaning all that acid (sugar) out of blood. So its best to keep it at bay, and interestingly, its lowest in the mooring when we have went without eating for some time. So biology 101 says, stay in that state as long as possible. Keep insulin level low because once they rise, we can’t burn fat. In essence, when you awaken, your burning fat for fuel, after you eat your burning off the food. Stay fit, stay fasted.
If I don’t eat Breakfast, won’t I have less energy?
Again, the old me, which is ironically the young me, would say yes. But after much experimentation on myself and others, and remembering finally what I was taught in school, not in the funny pages-no you will not have less, or none. In fact you will have so much mow energy you won’t know what to do with yourself.
When you rise cortisol is highest, insulin is low, and you were designed to be active, go kill, hunt, survive. Your Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) or fight or flight is turned on. We are taught cortisol is our stressful killer and we need to keep it at bay at all times. Truth is we need pay more attention to keeping it balanced like our ancestors did. High in the morning, low in the evening. If your a night owl…your living in opposite land and its killing you weather you know it or not.
Remaining driven by your natural SNS in the morning essentially utilizes fat for fuel, provides mound of energy, and does everything but allows us to tire out. Eating immediately kicks the antagonistic PSNS in, which regulates digestion, and relaxation. Hardly the way we want to attack the day. Adding insult, or insulin rather, to energy we are taught to carb the shit out of our breakfast so we have fuel for the day. Hmmmmm…eating a shit ton of cards early am simply ensures we experience reactive hypoglycemia a couple hours later and feel like we will die unless we feed. Remember, anything to make us eat those 4000 calories.
Eating Breakfast doesn’t give you energy, it stops energy, makes you lethargic, and ensures you buy more shit to eat in few short hours. Do you really think Paleolithic man had a drive thru to pop in on in the morning. Our a need to eat every damn hour. Sounds pretty unrealistic, and inefficient as hell.
Ok…but what If I work out in the AM, should I eat before?
You are even more well off than those in the evening who are ramping cortisol when it should be decreasing. Take full advantage of your fat burning capabilities and work out completely fasted. If at first you feel like shit, suck it up, and start taking L-Glutamine to help. Then address your diet as you are eating too many carbs throughout the day (most of us need less than 75 grams a day, and don’t think your special your just making excuses).
Working out fasted is one of the quickest ways to fat loss you can imagine. There is essential no insulin or calories hanging out blunting your fat burning process. Nor is there a relaxed state to overcome because your already ramped up. Simply make your post workout meal(most important meal of the day) your first meal of the day.
Won’t I Lose Muscle?
No. Muscle gain is a direct correlate protein intake, consistency, and exercise. Blast away at yourself time and time again, in short bouts. Eat at least 1 gram of protein per pound of body-weight, and make sure you define protein as something that roamed the earth at one time or another and your cool. In fact remaining in a fasted state will actually preserve muscle, and teach the body to better utilize fat burning.
Are you Jackin with me, is there anything else I need to know before I give up the “most important meal of the day”?
Nope I am preaching the truth. Works splendidly. Make sure to take in plenty of water as we are not interested in a fluid fast. Caffeine is fine, and even may enhance the effects, as far as any other supplements I may employ the help of L-Glutamine, and L-Carnitine, as they seem to be a sort of brain buffer when we challenge a no-carb zone.
Also carb burners who have yet to adopt a low carb intake enough to promote ketosis may find skipping BF uncomfortable at first….good. This should promote you to stop eating so many damn carbs and realize the anticancer, fat burning, and recovery effects of eliminating this non-essential quasi nutrient.
Lastly, don’t be that guy who gives a million reasons why your different than every other human and,”this just cant work because you need your morning oats”, speech…damn your annoying. Step out of your manipulated comfort zone, and put down your morning bagel for a big glass of shut the hell up and try something new. Go forth…and don’t eat. At least not in the am for now. One of the other reasons I avoided this post for so long is it forces me to join many other nutritionists who have addressed Intermittent Fasting, which I find amazing, but the information to make valid points is enormous and I have been collecting data for over six months, so sifting through all that info to bring you the cliff notes is laborious. But have no fear, the stop eating post is on its way.

Mindy – as sad as this is…congratulations on bleeding! A lifer for sure!
Fair warning to anyone attending the 5:30pm class…I plan to booty shake after each round of this WOD today. (See my comments in Compare Here above for explanation). You and me “Seven” – we gotta date to dance.

Yeah, Heather!! I get to witness the dance. I’m teaching. Can’t wait to dance with you!! You want my booty shaking music?
Jealous I’m missin the dancing, not so jealous that seven will have to wait til I give it another go. Scrimmage tonight… good luck everyone!
Chas – YES! I was actually gonna ask whoever was training if they’d be offended if I wore my ipod.
Somehow, someway I’m gonna have fun doing this one…hubby supposed to be home so i can make the 4:30 – fingers crossed!
Min – good luck tonight!
55 or 56:??
Not a fan of this Wod.
This wod is one of the few that I truly dread when I see it come up. The creator of this beast of a wko has de Sade beat at his own game. Really.
37:53 (m)
*85 lb thrusters, 155 lb deadlifts
Let’s take inventory of the small victories. I’m less modified than last time (more weight), and NOTHING HURT!!! Hallelujah.
Still… not sad to see this day pass. Also, I’ve confirmed what I’ve known all along. “Booty shaking” music does not improve my ability to throw around heavy stuff, especially when Heather’s grinding on me…
GO HEATHER!! YOU ROCK MOMMA!!!
1st time w this WOD–Modified but I finished!! 39:45(m)
Thanks Chas for always pushing me like you do & AWESOME job to the 4:30 class!!!
46:36 (m – kipping HSPU from abmat)

4:30 – thanks for lettting me dance my way through this and putting up with me. This workout was just as awful the second time as the first time. And yes, I did a little shake on Patrick, King, Lori AND Bonnie – sorry I missed you Caleb all though I’m sure your not sorry that I did! Nothing about this WOD for me was pretty…including my dance moves
Not a fan of the seven

my time was 40:04 I think. Modified as I was in the boot!
Loved watching everyones faces after this WOD as they sat and tried to move for about an half hour after ward.
